Tierp Municipality was in great need of a new waterworks or renovation of the existing one. After PE’s proposal of a unique solution, the waterworks could be renovated, yielding great benefits for the region’s inhabitants.
Tierp Municipality is home to Västland’s waterworks which were built in the 1970s. In recent years, the waterworks have required an increasing amount of resources for maintenance. Among other things, the filters have needed cleaning at intervals of six to eight weeks, compared to the standard of once per year. The pipes were full of deposits, and the risk of leakage and a complete stop to the water production was immediate.
Completely new type of membrane
Therefore, the waterworks were in great need of renovation or, at worst, being replaced by a new waterworks. In 2014, the planning of the work began, and PE was involved to contribute expertise in the selection of membrane, prefilter and dimensioning. The technical solution was a new type of membrane that had not seen large-scale use in Sweden before. The unique nano-filter membrane effectively filters organic substances in the form of viruses, bacteria, humus and parasites, while reducing the water hardness to the desired level. PE was also tasked with performing the project management, construction management and inspection.
A more secure supply of good water
The renovation was completed in 2016 and affected the region positively. The water has become much cleaner, and the waterworks have a greater capacity, allowing a more reliable delivery to local residents after the implementation. All this while achieving reduced operating costs. Furthermore, the chlorine consumption has been reduced by approx. 80-90 percent, further contributing to better and safer drinking water. The new solution also requires significantly less maintenance than before – one day per year is now sufficient to clean the facility.
